BLOG POST #1

Introduction

After the class was given the assignment to come up with an idea or concept for our on the street interview I decided to start an idea note book so I had a few ideas to work with. I struggled however to fill it but as I sat down to think of an idea to start the project, a friend of mine sent me a screenshot of something posted about her on an anonymous posting app implying she was a slut and along with the post was several anonymous up-votes (a users way of agreeing with a comment). After discussing the comment for a while I decided that anonymity on the internet was the topic I wanted to focus on and went about collecting five or six interviews asking people about anonymous posting apps, how they use them, and the pros and cons of being anonymous online.

I myself have an anonymous posting app on my phone and while I don't often post on it, I do like seeing the candor with which people speak on them, however I do find it upsetting or annoying when people are spoken about in malicious ways or when the discussions get extremely political. I wanted to see what other people think of these apps and see what part of either being anonymous or seeing anonymous thoughts they like or dislike and discuss how could we as a society maintain the benefits of it while filtering the negative aspects of it. One anonymous posting app specifically, YikYak, is very popular among the student body as evident by how often the posts on there have to do with High Point University specific affairs  so I thought it best to talk to other students to find some answers to my questions. Ironically, many of the people I chose to interview did ask to be anonymous however I did ask them to state their age and grade when I began their interviews.

Natural Sounds, Ambient Sounds, and Background Music

Most of my interviews took place indoors. Since it was very cold, snowy, and windy outside not many people were out and about, so I spent most of my time going into academic buildings and interviewing people I saw waiting for their classes to begin or simply studying in the common spaces. Frankly I find that the interviews are very clear and with such a topic I didn't find that many of them needed additional noise to make them more interesting, however in my intro where I talk about Tyler Clementi, an accomplished violinist who committed suicide as a result of cyber bullying, I decided the violin audio was a good way sound to start the "podcast" with.

My First Audio Editing Experience

This audio editing assignment was the first I've ever done besides editing volume before. It was an interesting new experience to have. Upon first looking at Adobe Audition, it was very daunting and I was very overwhelmed; There are lots of components to it and it is not the easiest to navigate without any instruction. So, I took to the internet and learned some basic ways to edit clips together. The only thing I really understood how to do was click I for 'input' and click 'o' for 'output', but that allowed me to apply what I do know about audio editing which is cutting out as much blank spaces and pauses as you can. So I did that. From there I felt more comfortable playing around with the application and even learned how to edit volume by accidentally clicking on the yellow bar a few too many times as I dragged the clips around. I genuinely enjoyed learning the basics of the program and am ambitious to learn some more advanced skills in class.
